Rose and Susa

La domanda in “The kiss” è: chi sta tradendo chi?

Four Yip at Two Fish

Cosa ne pensi del mondo dell’arte in Second Life?

Rose Borchovski’s interview

Rose Borchovski (aka Saskia Boddeke) is a great rl and sl artist. She uses the Metaverse for experimenting new ways of art communication. Very famous in Second Life is her “Susa’s tail”, the story of a teenager’s clonation (Susa) in which she explores the dark side which is inside each of us. Recently she has became famous for her battle against censorhip (see our “Susa bannata dalla Linden” and “Susa bannata dalla Linden – chapter 2″‘s article). In such an interview she tells us about her world, helping us to discover her wonderful universe of art.

Two Fish

How do you discovered Second Life, and what had attracted you in this world?

I was pointed out by a friend to have a look at SecondLife. Because I use new media in my rl work , I became curious. I first visited it as a traveller.I explored the sims and chatted with people. In the beginning I was primarily fascinated by the fact that the Secondlife universe was created by a community with mixed nationalities from all over the world. Then I felt it would be nice to have a home in SL .My first building experiences was building my dream house and slowly I started to understand and feel the possibilities of Secondlife and how to use it as a tool in my rl work.

The last chapter of this story is just now particularly famous for it’s absurde censorship from the SL7B. It is unbeleavable that Susa’s nakedness could be seen by anybody as something of scandalous. May be that somebody was bumped by its puritanism references. Can you tell us something more about this istallation and its links with religion?

The installation, which was banned from the SL7B celebration, was ”The Kiss”. It is part of the Susa Bubble story. The kiss is my: Last Susa Supper.

The last 13 Susas are totally out of balance and because they want to repair what is broken they decided they need a religion.

[The all text of this istallation is at the end of this article, ndr].

But also a religion in the end is not going to save them. We all have a betrayer somewhere hidden deep inside of us. We do not always betray out of vindictive actions.Sometimes a betrayal is because of surviving, choosing for yourself, when you feel you are left out. The question in “The Kiss” is : who is betraying who?Is it Susa 2 because she does not want to be a Susa anymore, and therefore betrays them by becoming a person of her own. Is it a selfish act out of jealousy or greed and should she have suppressed her lonely feelings because of a higher goal, which is: Finding back balance by following a religious leader.

Two Fish

Or is Susa 1 betraying Susa 2, Susa 1 decided to be the religious leader on her own and therefore denied her other half ( Susa 2). Susa 2 had no other choice then to become a person of her own, she was forced into this position. Maybe The Kiss is not an action of betrayal but a sad goodbye.

Or are all the Susas betraying each other, by choosing and following one Susa to be the religious leader, they deny their own responsibilities and also the essence of who they are: doubled personalities. They cannot cherish the odd, and are afraid of all that is and thinks differently. A religion helps them to exile and destroy what is frightening them in the name of the leader. They can wash the blood of their hands because nothing should bring in danger their leader and their believes and because of that they are forgiven.

You will find many Catholic references back in the Susa Bubble story.

The next Chapter is : that the susas will give up on religion and try democracy.

In one of your last notes you told us you were banned too from SL7B. How Linden did explain you this measure?

I have sent to Courtney Linden a notecard with the request to lift my “ban” as a visitor or at least take the effort to explain why. Courtney never replied.

More artists, gallerists and people in general were besides you in your battle against censorship. Which are your plains now about this campaign? You wrote in a note that you were worried about avatars’ vulnerability in SecondLife. Shall we be afraid for possible Rose Borchovsky moving towards other virtual worlds?

Of course that crossed to my mind. Why not moving to another grid? I have decided to explore the possibilities, but I also would like to stay in SL.Mainly because I have so many great ,interesting and challenging friends in sl.I do not want to give them up because of Lindens stubborn behaviour. I also find an enormous amount of inspiration in this world, I’m still an eager explorer and keep discovering great works of art in SL.

You are a great artist in rl too. Do you have at the present some plans in mixing sl and rl art?

At the moment we are working on a video/mapping show to celebrate the opening of the Science Museum Kopernik in Warsaw. The theme of the show is: The Big Bang.We project on the riverside part of the building, with the audience situated on the bridge and the river. The footage we project is a combination of RL material, animation, video mapping and SL material. Susa will be our leading role. It is very exiting to work on this show and quiet a challenge. I have spoken with Linden about this project and it looks like we ‘might’ find a short of collaboration on this project .I live in hope.

During last months your wonderful land, Two Fish, hosted a lot of interesting cultural events. What are your future plans about it?

Marmaduke and Kikas at Two Fish

I like to invite artists on my sim with complete art installations.Artists who work and express themselves in a completely different way then I do, but in a poetic way feel very close to me. It has worked out so well and I’m so grateful that they took time and effort to create an original work for Two Fish.

And of course I have SaveMe Oh living on my sim, she squatted a spot in the sky. In a weird way it fits, we are like ying and yang, complete opposites keeping each other in balance. Sometimes I wonder when we will crash, but we seem to manage, never a dull moment with Saveme.

And NO I’m not also Saveme OH, she has a different rl avatar.

What do you think about artistic world in sl?

I think it is a fascinating place, with some amazing artists.Secondlife just celebrated their 7th anniversary but it is still very young and still needs to develop as a platform for serious Art.  hope the Art world in SL will become more critical and serious. I hope Linden lab will embrace the Art movement in SL and give professional artists a proper space to create and expose, at the moment they do not give it priority. It might sounds weird but a good hair maker is probably more important for them then a bouncing art movement. They need more clients and these clients spent more money on handsome hair and sexy animations, then on a rotating prim art work.

The kiss

“We need a religion

Something to believe, a leader, wise and strong

Someone who can turn wrong into right

And right into left when it seems wrong

Among themselves they chose Susa one

The source from which they all sprung

Despite the fact she was the first to be double

One took the role of Leader on her own

Which of course was causing trouble

With a Supper they did try,

Drinking the wine,

Eating the fish

Breaking the bread

Sharing one dish

For a moment it felt good

All seemed to be at peace

but Susa Two kept sighing

not at all at ease

Two was jealous of the attention One got

And betrayed her with a single kiss

There was rumble in the sky

And the sun disappeared

One spoke soft: “why, oh why

Do you commit an act like this”

And that only because

of jealousy or greed

We were all friends

What more did you need ?

Two shrugged her shoulders

and turned all pale

I don’t feel like a Susa

I‘m person of my own.

My name is Judith now

leave me alone!

Who do you think you are?

They screamed out loud

You are not more than we are

Maybe even less than more

That should be enough to make you proud

They all knew it was the beginning of the end

Today’s enemy was yesterday’s friend

6 was irritated by the way 7 ate

4 did not like the time 9 went to bed

3 teased 4 with a freckle on her nose

7 convinced 6 there was something wrong with her toes

10 spat in the wine of 8 just to provoke

8 hit 10 in the face not charmed by the joke

9 annoyed 12 by just laughing out loud

and 2 just kept refusing to be one of the crowd

3 times the cockerel crowed

it became the period of denial

to be a Susa made nobody proud

and with out any shame

they made Judith to blame

and convicted her without trial

“It is not my fault”, Judith cried

“I’m not to blame

Blame her ! and her!”

And rather upset

She pointed around

We all make mistakes

You seem to forget”

Made it over there to the birthday party after it was all over and all you could see was lawn. The maps were still good. It was well divided into neat little squares. It is a singular distinction Susa did not seem to fit. Was her space occupied by another or was it lawn?
