Passo allora a farmi spiegare come vengono creati questi libri virtuali.

English version

Volando Amat is a person who has always had books of great care and passion in her life for her companions are irreplaceable. And ‘this is the reason why, in Second Life, his name is linked to publishing initiatives that, first printing with “Il Faro”, and now with his new creation “Volando Editions” have experienced and created projects “print” using the tools in Second Life.

I met her one afternoon and asked, first, what are the books in Second Life, and whether it is more convenient and practical to read on the web, e-book format. My provocative question was received, I have a feeling, a sense of blame. We’re in Second Life, he said, and the things that we create here are part of this world, such as buildings, trees and landscapes. Create something in Second Life, using the tools of Second Life, is the way in which residents make evolve this world. It would not make sense to say that a real tree is better, rather than those built by the builder in the Virtual World. So for the books: the ones in Second Life are created and used in the Virtual World. Logic unassailable.

Volando tells me when, by chance ended up in a giant library of a South American land, the desire was born in Second Life to bring his passion for books, presenting one day to create a real library with hundreds of books. The first steps in “The Lighthouse”, along with Rockerduck Bogdanovich, were very promising, now produces a few dozen books. This first experiment was then terminated for reasons independent from the project, volando, after a couple of months of reflection, went on to design the new initiative of “Volando Editions”, which, by the end of September, will be presented to the public.

Pass me then to explain how you create these virtual books. In fact, objects that are “worn” by the avatar, covering almost the entire screen, allowing a certain ease of reference and reading. I flew about a “machine” which, starting from the original notes as a result produces the object, then go book-browsing. Obviously, the images need an external editing, using an editing tool like Photoshop. I must say that this mysterious machine intrigues me much more than other things I learned about publishing virtual, and I plan to talk about that with the “printer” of Volando Editions, Loick Beaumont, who propose to hold lessons for teaching others the alchemy of the “Infernal Machine”. In this regard I volando adds that, for educational purposes, Loick has already created, of course, Second Life, a manual in three languages, and that she strongly supports, a sort of “instinct of the soul,” he says, to share with As others are learning and producing. There is no sense of ownership and competition, but only a passion, perhaps in part inherited from his mother (a writer in real life), which prompts her to advance these initiatives and to dream of that future books will be produced throughout the Second Life many independent initiatives.

He tells me then how we need a lot of patience and skill, like all complex structures in Second Life, to produce a volume the size of about thirty pages. One limitation that is not technical, but of pure balance between the need to produce a finished work, and the small size that have to have a virtual book. This not to bore the reader, often hasty and impatient, Second Life. In the case of larger books, you necessarily create more volumes. The books are then conveyed to the sale, either by vendors that vending machines, which accept payments diverting the percentage due directly to the author (via the scripts in the book). The publishing house, being very firm “no profit” of the fees go to cover the costs of production and distribution. I must say that the selling price of these books, which I anticipate flying, to me seems absolutely ridiculous, given the work behind for their preparation and production, but insists on flying a cultural initiative, hoping at least to cover expenses.

Volando is not defined “Director” of the publishing house, but “only” the founder, even though, according to her colleagues, she is the real soul of the printing, then leave to others the operational management of the project. Employees who have chosen that year joined for friendship (we like to stress) are ready to start the new company, while her this is now part of his life, and share with the new project fills joy and expectations.

I greet you and then giving her an appointment at the presentation evening, which will be designed to let everyone know about this new initiative, to illustrate how to use this virtual publishing.

Goodbye volando Amat, and good luck.
