Una nuova tappa di GenovArt

The second event organized by GenovArt is always a collective one, this time with four international artists: Sisi Biedermann, Sandi Benelli, Calypso “Caly” Applewhyte e Christower Dae.

Exhibition start date: May 31st
Exhibition end date: June 21st
Gallery: Black & White Gallery – GenovArt
Landmark:

As for the previous exhibition, I organized a collective interview with the artists, asking them to answer the same questions.

Sisi Biedermann

1 – What do you think about art in Second Life, is it different or is the same thing that in real life? And is it really art for you, or just a sort of tech game?

Sisi Biedermann: When I think about Second Life I visualize places I would like to see. I like to create art out of beautiful views. Not so different then Real Life art for me. If I see a pretty place I take a picture and create a piece of art. To me Second Life has never really been a game, but a beautiful place of creativity.

Sandi Benelli: Art in Second Life is going from great art to very common art. That is what I like about Second Life. You dont have to be a great artist in rl to be an artist in SL. Its all art but the styles and so variated. I love that people just throw themselfes out in trying – that is art to me.

(L’arte in Second Life sta passando dalla grande arte all’arte molto comune.

Calypso “Caly” Applewhyte: It would be necessary already to wonder about what is art. It can be expressed in many different ways as in real life. I think that on SL there are real creative people, whether they are creators of spaces (lands), sculptors (3D spaces or scuptures strictly speaking), photographers. We can even widen the notion of art for some creators of objects whose quality is exceptional. Of course, we are facing a technological game, but in which creativity is pushed to its maximum possibilities offered by Linden Lab. I would say that we are facing art when creativity, imagination and quality of realization are combined. And then, in real life, we find “art” that is not art at all…

Christower Dae: Let’s start from the fact that for me every form of creativity is Art, consequently using terms like “art” and “artist” to make a distinction becomes superfluous in any sphere. The Second Life tool has favored and helped the creativity of its users especially in the period before the introduction meshes with the ability to import from outside. I say this because I believe a creation to keep its own uniqueness must “belong” totally to Second Life. The tools made available, the objects, the total absence of gravity, the use of textures, scripts, lighting are all elements that make what the imagination can unique to imagine.

Sandi Benelli

2 – How do you perform your art, planning your creations, or working by inspiration at the moment?

Sisi Biedermann: I look for new places in Second Life to visit. Take many pictures and angles and views til i find one I really love. Then I play with textures and filters to get the look I am going for.

(Cerco nuovi posti in Second Life da visitare.

Sandi Benelli: In this kind of art I am exhibiting at GenovArt I decide the style and theme first, but these pieces are made from my inspiration of the theme I have chosen. In other cases where I make rl paintings, its all inspired from motives or moods I have seen or experiented. When I make my rl photo-art I simply choose from my very best motives.

Calypso “Caly” Applewhyte: I work mostly on the inspiration of the moment. In general, the theme is born from a photo made for a product (within the framework of the fashion blog), which I wish to develop within the framework of an exhibition.

Christower Dae: My entry into Second Life was out of pure curiosity, like all the other online experiences I have had. The approach initial was the exploration of the medium, understanding the potential it could offer. In the moment that there was the possibility to do of the screenshots I started capturing avatars and places. Over time I have dedicated myself only to portraits but I have always been animated by curiosity and guided above all by the inspiration of the moment. I have never experienced Second Life as a commitment given there my impromptu.

3 – How would you explain the digital art in Second Life to a real-life gallery owner, or to an art expert for example?

Sisi Biedermann: Never really thought of that. Most people I talk have no idea what a virtual world is. I would have to show them more then explain so they can feel the true experience of a virtual world. Making the art is no different then any digital format, using photoshop or any any art program you are comfortable with.

Sandi Benelli: Well that is a problem how to explain it? I tried that in a gallery I exhibited in in RL. The owner did not understand what I was talking about – haha. Its easier to talk to someone who knows what Second Life is. I have showed some of my Second Life art to people who do rl art, and they were very curious on how I make these pictures, and very surprised when I told them it was photos taken in a virtual world called Second Life.

Calypso “Caly” Applewhyte: I never asked myself the question. But I would say that it is exactly the same as art in real life, except that the tools, the supports are digital, dematerialized. The look, the sensitivity and the convictions of the artist remain the same.

Christower Dae: It is a complex question. You can explain what is created to a real gallery owner or to an art expert just by showing it on Second Life, because I think a creation of SL is an exclusive part of Second Life. The tool becomes part of every creation. How are they the lighting, the scripts, the sounds. Focus on the originality of the creation and the context in which it takes place. I’ve always imagined organizing an RL exhibition with various computers located in the room available to visitors in a way who see directly the creations of Second Life presented by their creators strictly online.

4 – If you are an artist (in some way) in real life, what do you miss most in a virtual world to best interpret your creations?

Sisi Biedermann: I am not an artist in real life, Second Life provides many creative places and beautiful views that you would fine in the real world, you also get the added luxury of fantasy places that you would never see.

Sandi Benelli: Actually I dont miss anything in Second Life, but I would like to have the same possibilities in RL as I have in Second Life. Second Life is a perfect place to show your art because you can modify your pictures/photos/paintings to all sizes and make them bright, which is not possible in RL.

Calypso “Caly” Applewhyte: I am not an artist in real life. But I used to draw a lot of portraits when I was much younger. So rather than a lack, Second Life offered me the opportunity to reconnect with this passion.

Christower Dae: I take photographs for pleasure in the RL. Honestly, I’ve never asked myself this. What I can say is that technically taking a portrait on SL is much easier. Perhaps what is missing is the variety of faces to be photographed since those who design faces for avatars tend to be more dedicated to aesthetics than to a search for details. The fact remains, the most important, that the photographer’s eye is always the same for both worlds.

5 – How do you choose your subjects? Do you have a specific orientation (avatars, landscapes, …) or do you work with different types of subjects? (Come scegli i tuoi soggetti?

Sisi Biedermann: I love nature, thats how I choose my subjects. Beautiful areas, with water, trees animals and birds are my favorite.

Sandi Benelli: Most of my subjects are made from my love to the nature. I do get so much inspiration from a walk in the wood or along the beach – it gives me energy to create my art from my memory or from photos I took along my walk.

Calypso “Caly” Applewhyte: As you have already understood, my passion is portraits. But without giving up other orientations, the future will tell us.

Christower Dae: I always let myself be guided by the inspiration of the moment. I hardly ever enter SL specifically to take pictures. If it happens to be at an event I can be attracted by some interesting face and I start shooting. I don’t take many photos for each subject but I spend a lot of time choosing the photo to suggest. Usually I try to use the lights that the viewer proposes, but I do not disdain some small tweaks on an editing software. I do not prefer posed photos, I have rarely prepared a photo shoot.
